Safeguarding Policy

Safeguarding Policy for Children, Young People, and Vulnerable Adults Lord Rama Krishna Cultural Centre:

1. Introduction

The Lord Rama Krishna Cultural Centre is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all children, young people, and vulnerable adults who participate in our activities and services. We recognise our duty of care to safeguard and promote their welfare, and this policy outlines the procedures we will follow to protect them from harm.

2. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • Protect children, young people, and vulnerable adults from harm, abuse, and exploitation.
  • Provide clear guidelines for recognising and responding to safeguarding concerns.
  • Ensure that all committee members, volunteers, and members understand their roles and responsibilities in safeguarding.

3. Scope

This policy applies to all individuals involved with the Lord Rama Krishna Cultural Centre, including committee members, volunteers, members, and visitors. It covers all activities, events, and services where children, young people, and vulnerable adults are present.

4. Definitions

  • Children and Young People: Anyone under the age of 18.
  • Vulnerable Adults: Adults who are or may be in need of community care services by reason of mental or other disability, age, or illness and who are or may be unable to take care of themselves or unable to protect themselves against significant harm or exploitation.

5. Safeguarding Principles

Our approach to safeguarding is based on the following principles:

  • The welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults is paramount.
  • All individuals, regardless of age, disability, gender, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation, have the right to protection from abuse.
  • Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. All individuals at the Centre have a role to play in safeguarding.
  • Early intervention: Acting quickly in response to concerns can prevent the escalation of harm.

6. Types of Abuse

We recognise that abuse can take many forms, including but not limited to:

  • Physical Abuse: Deliberate physical harm or injury.
  • Emotional Abuse: Persistent emotional maltreatment that causes severe and persistent adverse effects on emotional development.
  • Sexual Abuse: Forcing or enticing a child, young person, or vulnerable adult to take part in sexual activities, including inappropriate touching or exposure to sexual content.
  • Neglect: The persistent failure to meet basic physical and emotional needs, resulting in serious impairment of health or development.
  • Financial Abuse: Exploitation of a vulnerable adult’s financial resources without their consent.

7. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO): A committee member will be appointed as the Designated Safeguarding Officer, responsible for overseeing the implementation of this policy, providing advice, and handling safeguarding concerns.
  • Committee Members and Volunteers: All committee members and volunteers are required to understand and comply with this policy. They must report any safeguarding concerns to the DSO immediately.
  • Visitors and Contractors: Visitors and contractors will be informed of relevant safeguarding procedures when on the premises.

8. Safe Recruitment Practices

To ensure the safety of children, young people, and vulnerable adults, we will:

  • Conduct background checks, including DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks, on all volunteers and committee members who work directly with these groups.
  • Require references for all new volunteers and committee members.
  • Provide safeguarding training to all relevant individuals.

9. Responding to Safeguarding Concerns

If anyone has a concern about the safety or well-being of a child, young person, or vulnerable adult, they must:

  • Report the concern immediately to the DSO. If the DSO is not available, the concern should be reported to another committee member.
  • Record the concern in writing, noting the details of the incident, any witnesses, and the date and time of the report.
  • Maintain confidentiality, only sharing information on a need-to-know basis.
The DSO will assess the concern and take appropriate action, which may include:
  • Speaking with the individual involved (if appropriate).
  • Referring the concern to the appropriate authorities, such as social services or the police.
  • Keeping a record of all actions taken in response to the concern.

10. Confidentiality and Information Sharing

All information related to safeguarding concerns will be handled with the utmost confidentiality. Information will only be shared with relevant authorities on a need-to-know basis, following data protection laws.

11. Training

All committee members and volunteers who work with children, young people, or vulnerable adults will receive safeguarding training. This training will be updated regularly to ensure everyone is aware of the latest best practices and legal requirements.

12. Monitoring and Review

This Safeguarding Policy will be reviewed annually by the committee to ensure it remains effective and compliant with current legislation. Any updates will be communicated to all relevant individuals.

13. Policy Review and Updates
